New Mexico QB Trujillo arrested for pepper spraying girlfriend
The University of New Mexico football program has firmly established it’s reputation as one of Division I’s worst programs. A perpetually non-competitive program, the Lobos somehow managed to land Bob Davie as their next head coach– following the firing of controversial former head coach Mike Locksley– and are looking to turn things around in Albuquerque.
Trying to distance yourself from a quarterback who is willing to mace his own girlfriend is not a good way to start a rebuilding process.
According to sources, New Mexico walk-on quarterback Ryan Trujillo was arrested on Friday evening for macing his own girlfriend following an altercation which seems to have been centered around the woman spending time with her friends.
Trujillo allegedly swiped his girlfriend’s car keys after seeing her eating lunch with a friend, and proceeded to a university parking lot with the keys. The QB’s girlfriend then pursued Trujillo to the parking lot, demanding that he turn over the keys, and he refused. During the ensuing struggle, Trujillo used a small canister on his girlfriend’s keychain and sprayed her directly in the face, causing temporary blindness.
The Albuquerque Police Department criminal complaint against Trujillo noted that the incident was not an accident, and charged him with a petty misdemeanor of assault on a household member.
The 18 year-old quarterback was set to be a part of a quarterback competition for the Lobos this spring, but these chances may have blown away in the wind along with the pepper spray.
Just a flat out dumb decision by an impulsive 18 year-old.
What else is new.
