Texas A&M Requires College Football Opponents; Inquire Within
Texas A&M knew the transition to the Southeastern Conference would have a few bumps but football scheduling in 2012 has provided the kind of turbulence that drops the air masks.
Rather than opening September 1st in College Station against McNeese State, Texas A&M will travel to Shreveport to face Louisiana Tech on August 30th.
A much more intriguing game for college football fandom as a whole, the Aggies-Bulldogs tilt is on a Thursday night. For A&M fans, the game doesn’t offer the convenience of Kyle Field but a national spotlight, a more competitive opposing team and gambling possibilities might entice a trip.
The 2012 home debut remains September 8th against Florida, which also represents the SEC introduction for the maroon and white.
In need of another non-conference game, South Carolina State visits College Station on September 22nd. Their mascot is the Bulldogs and herein lies the end of my knowledge of the Aggies’ late September opponent.
Still in need of one more game, athletic director Bill Byrne hopes to have a foe for November 17th agreed to soon. Usually the late fall matchups are reserved for FCS teams to break up SEC monotony but with an FCS school already on the schedule, A&M is in a bit of a bind.
Only one FCS win can be counted toward bowl eligibility so two of them on the A&M schedule would necessitate seven wins for a postseason appearance.
Luckily, the Big East is about to lose West Virginia and each team will require another opponent as well.
As long as Boise State doesn’t bolt extremely early to the Big East, Texas A&M shouldn’t have an issue negotiating a game with one of the Big East and most importantly, FBS remnants.
