1969: The Bruins defeat the old Oakland Seals in one of the most decisive victories in the club’s entire history, 9-0.
1980: Philippe Sauvé is born in Buffalo, New York. Sauvé finished out his NHL career with Boston after previously playing with Colorado, Calgary and Phoenix. While he played just two games as a Bruin before heading down to Providence, and later quit the NHL altogether for the German leagues, he might be better known for his 15 minutes in the limelight on film. He played the part of Boston goalie “Sugar” Jim Henry in The Rocket, a 2005 movie based on the life of Maurice “Rocket” Richard. There is a famous photo of Henry shaking Richard’s hand, recreated in The Rocket by Sauvé shaking the hand of Roy Dupuis. Richard had suffered a concussion, but returned to score on Henry and secure the game-winning goal in game seven of the Stanley Cup semifinals. Richard still has blood on his face in the photo, but Henry shook his hand anyway and is bowing as a gesture of respect.
1982: Barry Pederson (who is now part of NESN’s TV crew) sets a club record (at the time) for points in a season by a rookie when he hits 67 during a 6-4 loss to the New York Rangers. His 66th and 67th points are both assists.
A year ago today: The Bruins beat the Edmonton Oilers 3-2, continuing their dominance of the six-game road trip. Michael Ryder, Nathan Horton and Rich Peverley scored. Tyler Seguin met fellow 2010 draft classmate Taylor Hall on the ice for the first time since they were drafted. Tuukka Rask made 17 saves (Devan Dubnyk was much busier, having to face 40 shots) and the Bruins were on the precipice of sweeping the entire road trip for the first time since 1972.
