Bruins Get Cuts for a Cause
Many of the Boston Bruins willingly sat in barber’s chairs and had their hair shaved off on March 28, all to benefit a Boston-area children’s hospital, but also to make people laugh at how different they looked without their flow.
The fifth annual Cuts for a Cause event raised $58,000 for the Floating Hospital for Children at Tufts Medical Center.
The way Adam McQuaid‘s hair was cut made it look somewhat like the mullet he sported throughout last season’s playoff run. “I wouldn’t do something like this if it wasn’t for a cause as good as this, and a lot of guys jumped on board this year,” he said.
Brad Marchand took a before and after picture, although the after picture led to some displeasure among fans. (I believe it was later ‘fixed’ by the actual barbers who were at the event.) “I’m feeling a lot faster already and now I don’t have to wash my hair anymore, I can save money on shampoo,” he said. The hairstyle he’d been growing in preparation for this event wasn’t very popular with his teammates either, though.
“Whatever Marshy’s been growing for the last little bit, I think we’ll be doing him a favor by shaving that off,” Shawn Thornton said.
Patrice Bergeron has been participating in Cuts for a Cause since its inaugural year, when it was held in a tiny conference room in front of 40 guests. He joked about needing to readjust his helmet for the newly-snug fit caused by his cut.
A late addition to the shearing roster was new Bruin Torey Krug, who got drawn into the festivities via Twitter. The official @NHLBruins account asked “Who thinks new Bruins defenseman Torey Krug should shave this mop today at Cuts for a Cause?” and linked to a picture. They urged fans to tweet the hashtag #ShaveKrug and added that The Bear has $601 to donate for shaving duty. The campaign was successful.
Benoit Pouliot was also not originally on the list of players slated to participate, but had his head shaved anyway–perhaps in lieu of David Krejci, who didn’t appear to be in attendance.
Thornton, who dutifully had his own head shaved too, was pleased with the way the event went.
“It’s amazing how many of my teammates got involved, it’s completely voluntary and it’s all on them and they step up and do a great job with it. It’s been relatively easy, everyone does a great job setting up,” he said.
