Today in Boston Bruins History: April 9
1981: The sole playoff penalty shot in Boston Bruins history is taken by Peter McNab during a 9-6 Bruins loss to the Minnesota North Stars. It is unsuccessful. This also sets the team record for most goals by both teams at 15 and most goals against.
1987: Cam Neely scores a hat trick as the Bruins beat the Montreal Canadiens 4-3 in overtime.
1988: A playoff game against the Buffalo Sabres incurs the Bruins record for penalties: 23. Note that this is not the record for penalty minutes in this game, just the number of infractions. Jay Miller has the most penalty minutes overall in this game at 32.
1998: The Bruins beat the New York Islanders 4-1 to clinch a playoff spot after missing the postseason the previous year (the first time since 1966-67 that they’d missed it altogether). Sergei Samsonov becomes the only rookie in the entire league to score a hat trick during the 1997-98 campaign.
2004: The Bruins defeat the Canadiens 2-1 in overtime of conference quarterfinals. Patrice Bergeron ends the overtime at just 1:26 with his first career playoff goal.
2009: A 5-4 overtime victory against the Canadiens is the 29th home win of the season for the Bruins–tying for second-most in team history.
A year ago today: Daniel Paille, Nathan Horton and Rich Peverley give the Bruins a 3-1 win over the Ottawa Senators in the penultimate game of the regular season. Tim Thomas wraps up the season with the highest save percentage in league history, .938, nudging out Dominik Hasek’s .937 record. Mark Recchi plays his 1,652nd game, good for fourth on the all-time list.
