Today in Boston Bruins History: April 11
1970: Wayne Cashman makes Boston Bruins history for penalty minutes in a playoff game when he notches 32 against the New York Rangers. The Bruins lose 4-3.
1972: Bobby Orr sets a record for goals in a playoff game by a defenseman when he scores a hat trick during a 5-2 win against the Montreal Canadiens.
1976: The Bruins shut out the Los Angeles Kings 4-0 behind Gilles Gilbert‘s 21 saves in quarterfinal action.
1977: Jean Ratelle ties the club record for assists in a playoff period when he has three helpers in the first period against the Kings. In this same game, Bobby Schmautz scores a hat trick, helping the Bruins win 8-3.
1981: The Bruins set another club record when they score three shorthanded goals during a 6-3 loss to the Minnesota North Stars. The North Stars have a shortie of their own, so combined they set another Boston record.
1982: Peter McNab ties the club record for most points in a single playoff period when he has a goal and three assists against the Buffalo Sabres. The Bruins win 5-2.
1990: At first, the Hartford Whalers are winning the game 5-2. But, when the final horn sounds, the Bruins take away the win, 6-5.
1991: That aforementioned record held by Ratelle is tied again by Craig Janney against the Whalers. In this same game, Cam Neely scores two power play goals in one period, the third, tying another team record. This helps lead the Bruins to a 6-1 win.
1996: The Bruins clinch an NHL-record 29th consecutive playoff appearance by beating the Whalers 3-2. Sadly, this streak will end in the very next season.
2010: The Bruins win 4-3 in a shootout against the Washington Capitals, so that’s their 19th shootout of the season. That ties a record for single-season shootouts by a single team.
A year ago today: The Bruins host the final hockey clinic of the season–soon they’re going to become quite busy.
