Today in Boston Bruins History: April 28
1969: Ted Donato (full name Edward Paul Donato) is born in Boston, Massachusetts. Perhaps it’s fitting that a Boston native would be drafted by the Boston Bruins, as Donato was in 1987. But he played for three years at Harvard University before making the NHL leap in 1991. He spent eight years as a Bruin, then went off to play for the New York Islanders (two stints), Ottawa Senators, Anaheim Ducks, Dallas Stars, Los Angeles Kings, St. Louis Blues and New York Rangers before returning to the Bruins and retiring after one more season in the black and gold. He also makes Boston Bruins history as the only man with the Bruins on his resume to appear on The Price is Right, where he made it to the Showcase Showdown. Today he is the head coach of Harvard’s team.
1974: The Bruins defeat the Chicago Black Hawks 6-2 in game six of their semifinal series.
1977: The Bruins beat the Philadelphia Flyers 2-1 in game three of their semifinal series.
1979: In the second game of their semifinal series, the Montreal Canadiens best the Bruins 5-2.
1983: The Bruins beat the Islanders 4-1 in game two of their semifinal series.
1986: David Krejci is born in Sternberk, Czechoslovakia. Krejci was drafted by the Bruins in 2004 out of the Czech junior leagues and moved to North America to play in the QMJHL after his drafting. After time spent with the Providence Bruins, he came up to Boston in 2007 and scored his first non-shootout goal in February 2008. Later in 2008, he notched his first hat trick, and for 2008-09 he won the team’s Seventh Player Award and the league’s Plus-Minus Award with +37. Remember when the H1N1 flu virus was the scare du jour? Krejci actually got sick with that in November 2009, but he recovered. In 2010 he played for the Czech team at the Olympics. His playoff hat trick against the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2011 cements a place in Boston Bruins history alongside Cam Neely, the last Bruin to have a hatty in the postseason. He led the league in goals during the playoffs last year.
1998: The Washington Capitals shut out the Bruins 3-0 in game four of their conference quarterfinal series.
1999: The Bruins best the Carolina Hurricanes 4-1 in game four of their conference quarterfinal series.
A year ago today: Max Pacioretty tells CBC that he has no ill will towards Zdeno Chara for the hit that caused Pacioretty to fracture a vertebra and suffer a concussion earlier in the month.
