Today in Boston Bruins History: April 30
1972: Phil Esposito notches one of his many places in Boston Bruins history by putting together three assists in a single period during a game against the New York Rangers. In the Bruins’ 6-5 victory, Ken Hodge also scores a hat trick.
1983: The Bruins drop a 7-3 decision to the New York Islanders in the semifinal series.
1999: In a conference quarterfinal matchup with the Carolina Hurricanes, the Bruins win 4-3. Ray Bourque takes ten shots all by himself.
2000: The Bruins play the Hurricanes in the conference quarterfinals again. Originally Boston was down two goals to nothing, but then they scored three times in the span of one minute and 52 seconds during the third period to get back into it. But with the game tied at three each, they went into overtime–and then second overtime–and finally Anson Carter scored to give the Bruins the 4-3 win. Bourque logged 53 minutes of ice time in this long game.
A year ago today: The Bruins return to Philadelphia, site of their 2010 playoffs collapse, but this first game sets the tone for the 2011 series. David Krejci has a four-point night (two goals, two assists), Nathan Horton scores, Mark Recchi scores, Brad Marchand scores twice and Gregory Campbell adds one more. The Bruins beat the Philadelphia Flyers 7-3, the most goals scored by the Bruins in a single playoff game since 1988.
