Today in Boston Bruins History: May 2
1932: RĂ©al Chevrefils was born in Timmins, Ontario. Chevrefils began his NHL career with the Boston Bruins in 1951, but also began drinking alcohol at that time too. Sometimes he would be hungover in the dressing room. The Bruins organization at the time actually encouraged Chevrefils to drink beer with dinner sometimes to bulk up because he was considered pretty scrawny. In 1955, the Bruins’ general manager predicted that Chevrefils would be an all-star and one of the best left wings to play in the league–later that year he was traded to the Detroit Red Wings as part of the Terry Sawchuk transaction. In Detroit, team officials tried to get Chevrefils into Alcoholics Anonymous and even hired private detectives to look after him, but frustrated by a lack of success, they traded him back to Boston the next year. 1956-57 was his only real full injury-free season and in that season, he was named to the All-Star Team. But by 1959 he had retired, eventually drawing an NHL pension with extra money coming in from a fund set up for needy players. He died in 1981.
1972: The Bruins beat the New York Rangers 2-1 in Game 2 of their finals series.
1976: The Philadelphia Flyers beat the Bruins 5-2 in Game 3 of their semifinal series.
1978: The Bruins take a 3-2 win in overtime versus the Flyers. Rick Middleton scores at 1:43 of overtime in the semifinal series.
1988: The Bruins beat the New Jersey Devils 5-3 to start their semifinal series.
1999: Byron Dafoe and the Bruins shut out the Carolina Hurricanes 2-0. They win their conference quarterfinal series in six games.
2011: Just like in 1978, the Bruins beat the Flyers 3-2 in overtime. This time David Krejci provides the overtime heroics at 14 minutes in the extra time. Chris Kelly and Brad Marchand also score. The Flyers keep Tim Thomas busy–he faces 54 shots, securing a place in Boston Bruins history (one of the highest shot totals in a playoff game, last seen in 1947).
