Dougie Hamilton Wins OHL Championship Game 1 in Double OT
Boston Bruins prospect and 2011 draftee Dougie Hamilton led his Niagara IceDogs to a 3-2 victory over the London Knights in Game 1 of their OHL Championship series. All it took was a full overtime period and about half of a second overtime.
The IceDogs scored first, four minutes into the first period, on a goal by Mitchell Theoret with Hamilton registered as the secondary assist. They then held the lead for much of the period after that, but the Knights tied it up with about three minutes to go before the first intermission. This tie held fast throughout almost all of the second period–until IceDogs captain Andrew Agozzino broke through on a goal where, once again, Hamilton was the second assist.
But the strong second period for the IceDogs was followed by the Knights knotting it up once more on a four-on-four goal by Seth Griffith. The IceDogs quite nearly got a chance to end it in regulation when Knights goalie Michael Houser misplayed the puck and left his net vulnerable, but his teammates stepped in to keep the IceDogs from scoring again.
In the second overtime stanza, Freddie Hamilton (a San Jose Sharks draftee) got the puck and passed it Dougie, stationed at the blue line. Dougie then sent a wrist shot past Houser to end the game–and, in celebration, did a somersault, sliding gleefully over to his team’s end of the ice. That one goal, two assist night earned Hamilton the third star of the game.
Check out the highlights here, including the victory somersault.
Game 2 of the series will be in Niagara on May 5 at 7 p.m. Perhaps there will be more reasons for Hamilton to do a little on-ice gymnastics.
