Milan Lucic Gets Twitter, Tyler Seguin Saved from Foul Ball
The Boston Bruins aren’t the most Twitter-happy team in the NHL when it comes to individual players having Twitter presences, but they did just add another player to their tweeting ranks.
Milan Lucic set up his Twitter account, with the handle @MilanLucic4 (he explained that he needed to add the number because of “too many pretenders out there,” although four does seem like a strange number to choose), on Aug. 15 after his fiancee Brittany Carnegie helped him get started.
He then proceeded to talk with Brian McGrattan, who plays for the Nashville Predators but was in the Bruins system for part of the 2010-11 season.
Then, Andrew Ference saw the Twitter newcomer–after Lucic greeted him with a simple “Hi friend!” tweet–and gave him a welcome that also teased Tyler Seguin a little.
Ference made an avatar for Lucic, too, although it has since been changed to a picture of the Bruins’ 2011 Stanley Cup engraving. It was in the style of Canadian South Park characters.
The teasing of Seguin continued.
Considering the fact that Carly Rae Jepsen’s inescapable “Call Me Maybe” appears to be popular among many hockey players, it’s entirely possible that Seguin does indeed know every word, although he hasn’t weighed in on that yet.
He did welcome Lucic to Twitter, though.
Besides, Seguin’s been busy lately, recently going to a minor-league baseball team’s game in Lowell for a speed dating event and throwing out the first pitch. While he was busy meeting fans and signing autographs, with his back turned to the field, a left-handed batter hit a foul ball that went sailing right at the back of his head–until the vice president of the Lowell team himself, Dan Beaulieu, leaped into action, using his cell phone as a shield to block the foul ball. Seguin’s head was saved, though the cell phone wasn’t so lucky because the screen was smashed to bits. Beaulieu’s hand also got bruised, but he didn’t seem to mind, laughing and joking with Seguin about saving his life.
(In response, Seguin said he’ll help Beaulieu get a new phone. Here’s a close-up of how badly the ball damaged his old one.)
Before the game, Seguin also took a moment to again congratulate Olympian Aly Raisman, who has returned to America, on her achievements at the Games. He said he was surprised that she talked to him on Twitter, especially because other big names like President Barack Obama and Lady Gaga also sent their wishes. The two haven’t met in person yet, though it’s possible they will soon.
