Clay Buchholz Gets Lit Up as the Boston Red Sox Lose to the Baltimore Orioles
The more established Boston Red Sox pitchers might need to start worrying if they can’t pitch better than the candidates for the final starting slots. Two days ago it was Jon Lester struggling against the Baltimore Orioles, today it was Clay Buchholz. The Red Sox starter gave up two home runs, getting taken deep by Adam Jones in the first for two runs and then again by Nick Markakis in the third, also scoring two. All told, Buchholz allowed five runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out three in his five innings of work. Mark Melancon gave up a run on three hits in his one inning appearance and Matt Albers scattered three hits without allowing a run in the final two frames. Boston starters and key relievers have had a terrible week and the result has been five straight losses.
Once again the majority of the Red Sox offense came from players who are on the fringes of the major league roster. Darnell McDonald led the way as he fights to keep his place on the roster. The veteran outfielder had three hits and scored one run while getting some time in center.
Another player who has been hot this spring as he fights for a job with the big league club is Lars Anderson. GM Ben Cherington spoke highly of Anderson’s bat this week while joining Don Orsillo and Jerry Remy in the announcer’s booth and said that the team wanted to see him diversify positions to help him find a place on the club.Andersonwas at his familiar position today, starting the game at first and getting a hit a run scored and a walk in the game.
Boston has split squad games tomorrow with Alfredo Aceves starting the game at JetBluePark against the Philadelphia Phillies and Felix Doubront starting the away game against the Florida Marlins. The Phillies contest will be aired onMLB.tv.
