Detroit Tigers Tee of on Josh Beckett, Beat Boston Red Sox 10-0
The Detroit Tigers have a line up that can punish opposing pitchers. Today, the guilty party was the Boston Red Sox starter Josh Beckett. The Tigers exploded for five home runs against Beckett. Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder each hit two solo home runs and Alex Avila added a two-run blast to the mix. Beckett pitched 4 2/3 innings allowing seven runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out three. Boston’s bullpen was unable to stop the bleeding after Beckett’s exit. Scott Atchison allowed one run in 1 1/3 innings and Matt Albers allowed two more in 2/3 innings. Justin Thomas came in to bail out Albers and Michael Bowden pitched a scoreless eighth, but in the endDetroit scored 10 runs against Beckett and theBoston bullpen.
Tiger’s starter Doug Fister was forced to exit the game early with an injury to his left side. Fister pitched 3 2/3 scoreless innings allowing three hits and one walk and striking out three. There is no word yet on the severity of his injury. Duane Below came in to relieve Fister and continued to keep the Red Sox offense in check, allowing just one hit and striking out two in 2 1/3 innings and earning the win. Octavio Dotel, Phil Coke, and Joaquin Benoit followed and preserved the shutout.
Two days after Justin Verlander dominated the Red Sox for eight innings, the Red Sox offense once again struggled to get on the board. Adrian Gonzalez and Ryan Sweeney had two hits each but the rest of the line up was relatively silent. The Sox managed just seven hits and two walks against Fister and theDetroit relievers.
The Red Sox will send Clay Buchholz to the mound to face Max Scherzer asBoston ties to avoid the sweep in the final game against the Detroit Tigers tomorrow at 1:05 PM.
