Carl Beane Boston Red Sox Late PA Announcer to Be Honored Tonight
The Boston Red Sox are returning home to Fenway Park to play the Cleveland Indians, but the “lyric little bandbox of a ballpark” will sound different this evening. Yesterday Fenway PA announcer Carl Beane died of a heart attack while driving. He will be honored tonight as the Red Sox PA is left silent in remembrance.
Beane’s car was found of the road in Sturbridge, MA yesterday around12:45 PM. The vehicle had crashed into a stone wall and a tree around 25 feet from the road. It was later revealed that the 59 year old Bean had suffered a heart attack causing the accident. No other vehicles or passengers were involved in the crash.
Carl Beane was the “voice of Fenway Park” since 2003 announcing every Red Sox home game since then. He been his performing career as a drummer, even once playing with Chuck Berry. He began in radio in 1972 working first as a DJ and then as a sports reporter. In addition to being the Boston Red Sox, Beane’s voice has been used by hundreds of sports radio programmers and stations. New York sports fans could regularly hear him as the voice of WFAN updates at one time and he has also lent his dulcet tones to ESPN at times.
Among his trademarks was the way he said Derek Jeter’s name. He would pause between reading “Derek” and “Jeter” to give the Fenway crowd two opportunities to boo the hated face of their top rival. Aside from that single quirk, Beane’s announcing style was simple and straight-forward. He prided himself on his professionalism and getting the player’s name right every time. He loved announcing at Fenway Parkand last night NESN play-by-play man Don Orcillo remembered Carl Beane remarking they had the best jobs in the world every day when they saw each other. His voice will be dearly missed by all those who enter Fenway Park.
