Tim Tebow Didn’t Invent Tebowing, Orel Hershiser Did
This season the NFL saw a new craze that has taken over the sports world, Tebowing. Tebowing, if you have been living under a rock and are not familiar with the term, is when an athlete (or anyone really) does something good and drops to one knee to pray. The term has been named after the most polarizing athlete in sports, right now, who has made the term, and act, famous. Tebow took over a 1-4 Denver Broncos team in turmoil and led them to seven straight wins and a berth in the AFC Divisional round, where they ultimately lost to the New England Patriots.
But there is new evidence that Tim Tebow wasn’t really the one who invented Tebowing, another athlete started it back in 1988 on the baseball diamond, Orel Hershiser. Yes Orel Hershiser was the first ever athlete, that we have evidence of, to begin Tebowing. The ex-Dodger ace first brought out the pose after closing out Game 7 of the 1988 NLCS against the New York Mets. Hershiser had just struck out Howard Johnson and sent the Los Angeles Dodgers to the World Series.
Yahoo! Sports were the first ones to break out the picture and they have also reached out to Hershiser to see if Tim Tebow (who had just turned one at the time). Hershiser has not yet replied to the requested interview by Yahoo! Sports but when he does it’ll be interesting to hear what he has to say about this whole ordeal.
