Philadelphia Phillies Re-Sign Cole Hamels, Avoid Arbitration
There has been much speculation this off-season on where Phillies pitcher Cole Hamels will be after the trade deadline as many have speculated that the New York Yankees will make a big push for the star pitcher. But as of right now the Phillies are not worried about where Hamels will be they are simply worried about getting the best rotation in baseball in tact so they can focus on another World Series run and that is exactly what they did on Tuesday.
Early Tuesday morning the Philadelphia Phillies re-signed the left-hander to a $15 million one year contract. The deal comes with great timing as it will help the Phillies and Hamels avoid arbitration, a process that no one really wants to go through. Hamels, although maybe not the Phillies best pitcher, has been the Phillies most clutch pitcher. Hamels led the Phillies pitching staff to an amazing 2008 title run going 4-0 and posting a combined 1.56 ERA. Hamels was also the World Series MVP for his amazing pitching in the fall classic (1-0 2.77 ERA).
Hamels 14-9 last season with a 2.79 ERA in 32 games and was selected to his second career All-Star game and also finished fifth in the National League Cy Young voting. The Phillies will need Hamels to be at his best once again this season if they are going to finish the season with a World Series title in hand.
