MLB Playoff Changes Likely in 2012
The playoff format in Major League Baseball was slated to change in 2013 with the addition of two Wild Card teams. Bud Selig, apparently feeling like a boss with his new extension, expects the alterations ready for the 2012 postseason.
Though logistics aren’t yet complete, there’s no reason to believe scheduling is a hindrance.
By adding a Wild Card in each league, the one-game playoff between the two non-division champion teams means more baseball and a raucous atmosphere.
Selig hopes to capitalize on the frenzy that resulted last season as the final day saw Tampa Bay earn a playoff spot on a walk-off home run and eventual World Series champ St. Louis sneak in by the skin of their teeth.
While Wild Card’s emerging victorious at the World Series is no rarity, 2012 and beyond could produce a third-place division finisher as baseball’s best team.
Presumably, the American League East loves that idea.
In another rules tweak, division champions, when a tie in the standings occurs, no longer will be decided by head-to-head record.
With the institution of the Wild Card one-game playoff, it makes winning the division of paramount importance to avoid ending a season on your team’s starting pitcher’s off day.
Now, ties at the top of the division will be played on the field in one game, with the loser headed for the Wild Card round.
