Boston Red Sox and David Ortiz Avoid Arbitration
The Boston Red Sox and David Ortiz have agreed to a one year contract worth $14.575 million. The 36 year old DH will return to the Red Sox for his 10th year with the team and 15th year in the big leagues. Ortiz batted .309 with 29 home runs and 96 runs batted in. This was not a surprising move for the Red Sox as they have publicly said that they wanted Ortiz to return for the upcoming season but were obviously hesitant at giving him the multi-year deal that he has requested.
This is a good move for the Red Sox because it would have been a risky proposition to give Ortiz a three or four year deal. Age seems to be catching up to Ortiz as his production has been slowing the last few years and has seen a revival from the 2009 campaign when he only hit .238. However, the years of 30 home runs and near 100 RBIs are coming to an end rapidly and this could be the last year that he approaches that level of production.
Boston enjoy this final good year of production from David Ortiz because it may be his last.
