Los Angeles Angels Favorites to Sign Roy Oswalt
The Los Angeles Angels shocked the baseball world this offseason, walking away from the Winter Meetings with Albert Pujols and C.J. Wilson. Do they have room for one more big addition?
ESPN analyst Jim Bowden reported last night that the Halos are currently the favorites to sign starting pitcher Roy Oswalt.
Los Angeles was originally expected to have Jerome Williams pitch in the fifth spot of their rotation, but is questionable for Opening Day due to a strained hamstring. That leaves 23-year-old prospect Garrett Richards as the favorite for the No. 5 spot, with Brad Mills and Trevor Bell also in the mix.
Regardless of who emerges, the Angels are uncomfortable with their options, and clearly would love to upgrade the last spot of the rotation. Despite the questions surrounding the fifth spot, the Angels already have one of, if not the best rotation in the American League.
The Angels’ first four starters are as follows: Jered Weaver, Dan Haren, Wilson and Ervin Santana. Last season, Weaver was the runner up to Justin Verlander in AL Cy Young voting, Wilson finished sixth and Haren ranked seventh.
Last season with the Philadelphia Phillies, Oswalt went 9-10 with a 3.69 ERA over 23 starts. At 34-years-old, he still has plenty of pitched left in his right arm, but he struggled with back problems in 2011. Oswalt has played his entire 11-year career in the National League.
At this point, however, no one is confirming Bowden’s report. No one’s denying it, either.
