Although the Texas Rangers do not start the MLB season until Friday against the Chicago White Sox, they take the cake for coolest thing done on Thursday.  The team has unveiled a statue of Shannon Stone, the man that fell to his death while trying to retrieve a baseball for his son in the summer of 2011.

The Rangers have done a great job with handling this situation.  Their reaction last year was well thought out and Josh Hamilton was legitimately stricken by the incident.  Hamilton was the one who threw the ball that Stone was trying to grab.

According to Richard Durrett, Shannon’s son Cooper was in attendance at the statue unveiling and he was greeted by all the players.  Cooper was just a kid who went to enjoy a baseball game with his dad, but he has done a wonderful job of surviving through this tough time.  Not many kids his age have to deal with this, but Cooper has been an inspiration to many.

Even as a White Sox fan, I wouldn’t mind seeing the Rangers win for Cooper’s sake.  I would love to win the series against the Rangers, but giving Cooper an opening day win would be great.  Once again, he’s been through a lot.  I’m glad that I have never had to deal with the death of parent.

This a great gesture by the Rangers and this is one special moment.  Great job by the team reaching out and not forgetting the Stone family.

Thanks to Richard Durrett for the photo.
