St. Louis Cardinals Play Spoilers For Milwaukee Brewers On Opening Day

The Milwaukee Brewers got off to a fast start with Carlos Gomez’s RBI triple in the first inning but the St. Louis Cardinals came back with a vengeance.
Yovani Gallardo was clearly not himself as he struggled with his command throughout his entire outing. He never made it through four innings as manager Ron Roenicke elected to take him out early as he failed to get outs when necessary. Gallardo surrendered six earned runs off seven hits while walking five and striking out three in 3.2 innings pitched. He also gave up four home runs, three of which came in the third inning with zero outs recorded.
St. Louis’ Jaime Garcia on the other hand was outstanding as he only surrendered two earned runs, both of which came in the first inning, in 6.0 innings pitched. The Cardinals’ pitchers were flawless and the batters left off just where they did last year at Miller Park when the Cardinals clinched a World Series berth.
Carlos Beltran, Matt Holliday, Yadier Molina and David Freese all homered in the game which is something St. Louis fans will see a lot of this season. Whereas the Cardinals did everything right in the victory, the Brewers could not buy a run even with several players in scoring position.
In the fifth inning, the Brewers had runners at the corners with zero outs after Mat Gamel and Jonathan Lucroy recorded back-to-back singles. Rickie Weeks hit a hard grounder to the right of second base but Lucroy ran into the second baseman and interfered with his ability to make a play on the ball. This resulted in him being called out and Gamel being forced to return to third base without a run scored. Gomez then flew out which resulted in the Brewers coming away with nothing.
In the seventh inning, Gamel and Lucroy once again led off with back-to-back singles. With runners on first and second, Nyjer Morgan grounded out into a fielder’s choice while Weeks followed it up with a double-play resulting in zero runs scored. Backup catcher George Kottaras gave the Brewers some redemption in the ninth inning when he hit a pinch-hit three-run homer to give the home fans something to cheer about.
One thing is for sure, the Cardinals look like they have not lost a step since winning the World Series last season and are clearly the team to beat in the NL Central. It was clearly not the Brewers day, not to mention an unfortunate way to begin the season, but the good news is Milwaukee knocked off a lot of rust which could benefit them going forward. That starts tomorrow when Zack Greinke takes the mound against Adam Wainwright.
