David Wright Out Indefinitely With Fractured Right Pinkie Finger

New York Mets third baseman David Wright will be out indefinitely with a fractured right pinkie finger, according to Andy Martino of the New York Daily News.

The fracture will not require surgery, but Wright is wearing a splint for the time being. He will be reevaluated tomorrow, and the Mets hope to come up with a more concrete timetable for his recovery. Wright originally injured the finger while diving back to a base Monday.

Mets fans actually had reason to be excited after the first few games. The team entered tonight 4-0 and Johan Santana has looked really good. Wright is easily the face of the franchise now that Jose Reyes is gone, so losing the 29-year-old is going to be a big blow, both on the field and in the ticket office.

Wright played just 102 games last season, missing two months with a stress fracture in his lower back.

The Mets started Ronny Cedeno at third base tonight. It was Cedeno’s fourth start at the hot corner in eight seasons as a major leaguer. Other options to replace Wright include Daniel Murphy, their regular second baseman, and Justin Turner. If Wright misses significant time, the Mets also have 25-year-old Zach Lutz, who has a .286/.381/.484 slash line as a minor leaguer, on their 40-man roster.

Manager Terry Collins may not want to take his players out of position, but it looks to me like the best option would be to swing Murphy over to third and let Cedeno play second base. Of course, now may be the perfect time for the team to see what they have in Lutz, but he’ll only even possibly get a look if Wright is forced to take a stint on the 15-day disabled list.
