Ozzie Guillen: Why Ozzie Being Ozzie Has Run Its Course
Breaking News: Ozzie Guillen is a moron. I knew this all the way back in 2006 when he managed the Chicago White Sox like an incompetent boob, but it took Miami Marlins’ fans a whole week to learn their manager is as wise as your average 7th grader. Ozzie Guillen simply does not get it – and by it – I mean everything. Whether it’s basic baseball strategies, forming coherent thoughts, or handling the job with professionalism, Ozzie Guillen waived bye-bye to all three of those things a long time ago.
I’m a politically incorrect guy, too. But I don’t manage a Major League Baseball team that is always in the public eye. I say stupid stuff to my friends privately, not in front of TV cameras or publicly syndicated magazines. Personally, I don’t really care what Ozzie said about Castro, because I’m not a Cuban-American. Granted, I’m smart enough to realize his comment is completely ridiculous, but it was also misconstrued.
All Ozzie said was he admired Castro for staying alive when people have been gunning for him for the past forty years. I certainly can see his point, but that doesn’t make it acceptable. If I’m going to coach a girl’s basketball team, I’m not going to wear a Chris Brown T-shirt and call one of my plays the Ike Turner – am I?. This is why the Miami Marlins – who play their games in “Little Havana” – had to suspend Guillen for five games. But is a suspension enough?
If you can’t tell by now, I really loathe Ozzie Guillen. But people need to realize this is who he is. Ozzie Guillen isn’t an educated man like so many of us. He’s completely ignorant when it comes to the proper social behavior. He doesn’t have that little guy in the back of his mind that says “hold on” when a thought comes to him. Like his career as a batter, Ozzie has no discipline and just swings for it. Yet, people love and defend his actions by saying it’s just Ozzie being Ozzie.
Wow, I wish I had that built-in excuse for everything I did. We didn’t tell Ted Bundy it was fine to murder young women because it’s just Ted being Ted – did we? Yes, I realize the slaying of several girls doesn’t equate to what Guillen said, but the point stands.
Ozzie Guillen has a free pass to say whatever the hell he wants because he has never faced a real penalty for all the outlandish things he has said. The media, the Chicago White Sox, and now the Miami Marlins have enabled this clueless idiot for far too long. They have been a horrible authority figure towards Guillen, similar to a parent telling their child not to eat a cookie before dinner, but not punish them when that kid eats the cookie.
Ozzie Guillen has been sneaking cookies throughout his whole career. When will enough be enough?
