San Francisco Giants Closer Brian Wilson Facing Elbow Surgery?
According to multiple reports, San Francisco Giants closer Brian Wilson has structural damage in his elbow which could lead to a meeting with renowned Alabama-based sports medicine doctor James Andrews, and in a worst-case scenario, season-ending Tommy John surgery.
Both Amy Gutierrez of Comcast SportsNet Bay Area and John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle had recent tweets regarding Wilson’s injury:
Wilson presumably will be placed on the 15-day Disabled List– at a minimum– when reliever Ryan Vogelsong is removed from the DL tomorrow, and if indeed Wilson does make a trip to Alabama to see Dr. Andrews, things will unfold from there. Wilson alerted reporters on Friday he felt something grind in his elbow after making two consecutive appearances, and after an MRI the structural damage in his throwing elbow was revealed.
Losing Brian Wilson would be a huge blow to a Giants team that seeks to regain the form which made them one of the MLB leaders in virtually every pitching category during their World Series run in the Summer of 2010. Without Wilson, the Giants would be forced to find a new closer to fill his shoes– not an easy task by any stretch of the imagination.
Regardless of how you may feel about Brian Wilson as an individual– there is no doubt he is one of the game’s most polarizing– there is also no doubt he is one of the best closers in baseball.
Closers don’t grow on trees, and the loss of Wilson for the season should he have to undergo a Tommy John procedure would be the first bad news of the young 2012 season for Bruce Bochy and the San Francisco Giants as well as their fans.
