San Francisco Giants’ Closer Brian Wilson Has Structural Damage in Elbow; Possible Surgery
Kelly L Cox-US PRESSWIRE

The San Francisco Giants have had an interesting start to the 2012 season. They got swept on the road by the Arizona Diamondbacks, who are their biggest competition in the National League West. Also, Tim Lincecum has been hit very hard in his first two starts this season, having an ERA over 12. But with this breaking news, the Giants have to dig even deeper if they want to regain their National League West title. The Beard, Brian Wilson, has structural damage in his elbow that may require surgery.

I watched Brian Wilson save the game on Thursday against the Colorado Rockies, and he didn’t look himself. I just chalked it up to early season jitters, but apparently there is more to it. The trainers did have to attend to Wilson in that game, but it appeared it was a leg issue rather than an arm issue. I guess I was wrong, considering Wilson is set to see baseball’s most famous surgeon, James Andrews.

Coming into the season, I wasn’t really high on the Giants to begin with. Way too many holes in that line-up for my liking. If they were going to win the National League West – which they still can – they needed to do it with their pitching. And with Tim Lincecum regressing before our eyes and Brian Wilson’s elbow in question, the Giants will need some unsung production out of somewhere.

Without knowing too much about the Giants, I expect their ace reliever Sergio Romo will move into the closer’s role, weakening their middle relief in the process. This is why having a steady closer is so important. It’s the psychology of everything involved, not the production. With Romo moving into the closer’s role, everyone else will have to adjust to a new role in the bullpen.

Tough news for the Giants and Brian Wilson, but the rest of the NL West rejoices.
