San Francisco Giants Extend Madison Bumgarner
The San Francisco Giants are slowly locking down the core of their rotation for the future. The Giants have agreed to extend left-handed pitcher Madison Bumgarner. The Giants and Bumgarner have agreed on a five-year extension worth $35 million, a deal that will keep him in San Francisco until 2017 but includes a vesting/club option for 2018 and a club option for 2019.
The deal sets a record for pitchers with one-plus years of Major League Baseball experience. Bumgarner is still only 22 and may not have earned this contract.
General Manager Brian Sabean said in a press release, “Preserving our core pitching for the long term remains a top priority for the Giants and today’s extension certainly helps further that goal. Madison has already proven that he is one of the best left handed pitchers in the game today and we are confident that he will continue to succeed for many years to come.”
The contract will cover his pre-arbitration season, his three seasons of arbitration eligibility and one free agent year. If Bumgarner qualifies for super two status, the amount of the contract increases to $40 million. The deal includes a no-trade clause but Bumgarner can only block trades to eight teams per year.
Last season, Bumgarner was 13-13 with a 3.21 ERA in 33 starts. Bumgarner struck out 191 batters as well. This season, he is 1-1 in two starts and has recorded an ERA of 3.97.
It is amazing how one pitcher can go from making $450K per year to almost $7 million per year in only a few months.
