Philadelphia Phillies’ Cole Hamels Signed Lifetime Contract With San Diego Padres For $1
In all the things someone could have dug out of their drawers, somehow Gaslamp Baseball found out that current Philadelphia Phillies pitcher and 2008 World Series MVP Cole Hamels signed a lifetime contract with his home town team the San Diego Padres a month after he was born.
At that time the Padres general manager was Andy Strasberg and Hamels’ mother worked for the Padres in 1984, the year Hamels was born and cut a deal with the team that was actually rather cheap than what the Phillies or any other MLB are going to pay him down the line. The Padres got him for $1.
Strasberg put the photo in his new book titled “Baseball Fantography: A Celebration in Snapshots and Stories from the Fans.” The book is supposedly getting tremendous reviews.
The oxymoron in this case is that Hamels admitted to be a long-time Los Angeles Dodgers fan although from San Diego. The Padres should call the Phillies to get some kind of deal to get Hamels back to the team, but that will probably not happen even though it is cool to see that Hamels’ mother took the initiative to get her young son this memory keepsake that I’m sure anyone would save forever.
Hamels was drafted by the Phillies in 2002. Since then, Hamels has won a World Series MVP, NLCS MVP and a World Series itself. He has compiled a record of 77-55 in seven years on the team. His ERA is 3.38 for his career. This season, Hamels is 3-1 in four starts in a rotation that is surrounded by Roy Halladay and Cliff Lee, both terrific pitchers added to a the talents of another terrific pitcher.
