Report: Detroit Tigers Release Third Baseman Brandon Inge
The Detroit Tigers are taking a big step in shaking up their infield. Long time third baseman for the Tigers, Brandon Inge, has been released by the team according to Danny Knobler of CBSSports.com. The strong Tigers team did not have a spot for the long time Tiger player.
The Tigers signed first baseman Prince Fielder over the offseason which made Miguel Cabrera move to third base which moved Inge out of a spot. Brad Eldred, Ramon Santiago and Don Kelly all have the ability to play the infield as well and could provide better pop than Inge in the lineup.
Inge was activated from the 15-day disabled list April 14 after injuring his groin towards the end of Spring Training.
Eldred’s contract was purchased to take the Inge’s spot on the roster.
Inge spent 12 seasons with the Tigers tallying 1408 games for the club. Inge batted .234/.304/.387 during his time the team as well as recording 1083 hits. Inge did not have that great power numbers only hitting 140 homers and driving in 589 RBI. Inge never had a season where he batted over .300 and struck out over 100 times in six seasons.
Last year, Inge played in 102 games spending time on the disabled list because of mono. He was designated for assignment midseason but cleared waivers and was outrighted to the minors. Inge was called up in August 2011 and played for the rest of the season.
Any team that needs infield depth would definitely consider the 2009 All-Star infielder.
