Video: Bryce Harper Plays Softball at Washington Monument on Day Off
Bryce Harper may be baseball’s next superstar, but he’s still a 19-year-old kid.
The Washington Nationals rookie outfielder decided to have some fun on his day off Monday, taking a few hacks at an informal softball game being played at the Washington Monument. Here’s a low-quality video:
The fact that Harper is so willing to expose himself among the fans is made even more surprising considering he was rushed by a fan at Dodger Stadium this weekend. Thankfully, security got to the fan before he made it to Harper, but who knows what that idiot was planning.
We’ve heard stories and have seen pictures that make Harper seem like too much of a showman. In high school and college, Harper wore John Randle-style eye black. In the minor leagues, he blew a kiss at a pitcher after slugging a home run.
This guy is brash, heck, call him cocky if you like. When you boil it down, however, Bryce Harper as a baseball player is just an entertainer. His main job with the Nationals is to sell tickets.
I think this guy deserves a break and should be applauded for his willingness to go out into the community and put smiles on people’s faces. Isn’t this how we all hope our favorite baseball player would act?
This shows that Harper is a real human being and isn’t afraid of the fans. It shows, too, that he is like most 19-year-old kids and just wants to have fun sometimes. For the fans that were at the Washington Monument, seeing Harper take a couple rips at a pick-up softball game will probably be one of if not their most vivid baseball-related memory.
What a story to tell.
Seeing this video makes me wonder what else happened on Bryce Harper’s day off. I wonder if he stole his friend’s dad’s Ferrari and sang the Beatles in the middle of a parade.
