Josh Beckett Gives Up Seven Runs in Return from Injury
Josh Beckett had a short start for the Boston Red Sox Thursday night against the Cleveland Indians, lasting just 2 1/3 innings.
Maybe he didn’t want to miss his tee time.
Beckett missed his last start due to soreness in his right side, but that didn’t keep him from getting in a round of golf. On almost any other team, this wouldn’t have even been reported. The Red Sox, especially this year’s club, are a whole different story.
Beckett gave up seven runs on seven hits and a pair of walks and was booed as he walked off the mound.
The past seven months have been a nightmare for Boston. After they had the worst collapse in baseball history last October, the offseason was dominated by stories of the pitching staff eating fried chicken and drinking beer in the clubhouse during games. Manager Terry Francona, GM Theo Epstein and team captain Jason Varitek all departed one way or another.
Since play has resumed, things haven’t gotten any better. The Red Sox are now 12-19, dead last in the American League East. They’ve started May 1-7.
Maybe Beckett and the rest of the team should just pack it in and spend the rest of summer on the links. If this team continues to have embarrassment after embarrassment, the Fenway Faithful are going to continue to turn on their team, and for good reason.
Thursday’s 8-3 Cleveland victory was the first of a four-game series. Clay Buchholz will try to lower his 9.09 ERA Friday night. It should be interesting to see how patient Red Sox Nation will be with Buchholz, who has given up at least five runs in each of his six starts. Ubaldo Jimenez gets the nod for the Indians.
