New York Mets likely to offer David Wright long-term deal
The New York Mets are taking the necessary steps in getting an offer together to the face of their franchise, David Wright. A possible long-term extension offer could be coming Wright’s way in the summer. This is being quietly prepared since Wright was not talking to the Mets about an extension three weeks ago.
Wright is scheduled to make $29 million this season and has a club option for the 2013 season where he will be making $16 million. There was no comment from general manager Sandy Alderson on the negotiation talks between Wright and the Mets. However, Alderson reiterated that he will not dangle Wright in front of any team this coming trade deadline.
So far this season, Wright is off to an amazing start. He is batting .402/.489/.598 with four home runs and 21 RBI. This is one of the best seasons Wright has started off with and Alderson has made it clear to the media that he is not in a rush to re-sign Wright at any point this season.
The problem that they might come across with Wright is that if they cannot re-sign him before next winter, the Mets will have to consider moving him to save some kind of money. However, Wright is the face of the franchise and he is the best player on the team that is sitting in the middle of the National League East division.
The Mets certainly do not want to have another Jose Reyes situation on their hands. The team believes that they could get Wright at a bi of a discount because of his love for playing in New York.
