The Brooklyn Nets are changing the forefront on what Nets basketball is. The future of the Nets is bright, something that has not been said of the Nets in a long time since they are tied with the Minnesota Timberwolves for having the worst record in the NBA over the past three seasons.
Center Brook Lopez and newly acquired Joe Johnson are both very optimistic on the Nets’ chances for making a run to the finals this season. Lopez and Johnson both said that the Nets intend to win a championship this coming season.
“Obviously our main goal is no question the NBA championship. I think it is realistic for us,” Lopez told the Philipine Star during his NBA goodwill tour of the Philippines. “We’re already a good playoff team so with the addition of other pieces, we can target the ring.”
Johnson told Sports Illustrated:
“That’s what we are shooting for – the ring,” he said. “There’s no need to sell ourselves short. You talk about gelling and figuring it out, and I think we have the perfect pieces: a great point guard, a great center. I don’t think any of our positions are the same or overlap at all.”
Johnson has even said that he is training a lot more than he has in previous seasons. Johnson is excited to be with the Nets even though he will have to share the role of scorer with people like point guard Deron Williams. However, this could take a lot of the pressures that he may have had to deal with in Atlanta with the Hawks.
Although hopes are high in Brooklyn, it will be extremely difficult to top the Miami Heat in the East especially since they signed Ray Allen over from the Boston Celtics. The Nets have made a lot of changes and things could be looking up for the franchise.
