After a disappointing start last year, the Buffalo Bills–who finished the 2010 season with a 4-12 record–can officially say they have a winning record through one week of the 2011 season after crushing the Kansas City Chiefs 41-7 on Sunday–mainly thanks to an impressive performance by quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick.
The former Harvard standout completed 17 of 25 passes for 208 yards to go along with four touchdowns to help his team overcome the defending AFC West champions in a game that turned out to be a blowout. With the third overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, there were questions surrounding the Bills and whether or not they should select a quarterback–but they decided to pass up on the opportunity and stick with Fitzpatrick instead.
It may be just one game, but Sunday’s win over the Chiefs was a positive sign for Fitzpatrick and the Bills considering how inconsistent he was last season. There were times during the 2010 season when Fitzpatrick looked like an elite, but there were also times where he just looked like an average quarterback.
Hopefully, Sunday’s win over the Chiefs was more than just a one-time thing for Fitzpatrick and he can continue to play at that level on a weekly basis.
