Brent Sutter will not return as Calgary Flames coach
The Calgary Flames announced today that head coach Brent Sutter will not be returning as head coach of the team next season. It is said to be based on a mutual agreement. Assistant coach Dave Lowry also will not be returning.
Sutter, who has been the Flames coach since he left the New Jersey Devils in June 2009 is the latest in many head coaches, and general managers who have been fired this past season for under performing. At the beginning of the season the Flames were seen as a playoff team, and remained in the playoff race for much of the season before sliding out of contention in the last few weeks of the season.
It is anybody’s guess who the new head coach of the Flames will be next season. Since the 11′-12 season just ended the team will have plenty of time to choose a new one, but a new coach will probably be announced in a couple of months around draft time so the team and the new coach can try to find a new game plan early to help move them in a better direction.
The Flames are seen to have a solid core, and have some young up and coming prospects including Sven Baertschi, and Akim Aliu, so it is not too far fetched that under the right direction the Flames can be back in the playoff race as soon as next season.
Flames general manager Jay Feaster will address the media, and it will be streamed live HERE
