Carolina Hurricanes sign Tim Gleason to Contract Extension
The Carolina Hurricanes had plenty of time during the NHL All-Star Weekend to think about the future and direction that this team was going to be headed. Their new direction was started today as they signed their top defenseman Tim Gleason to a contract extension through the 2015-2016 season.
Gleason is currently 29 years old, and has led the Hurricanes defenseman in every major defensive category including hits, plus/minus, total minutes played, and has been key on the powerplay at times during the season. Hurricanes General Manager Jim Rutherford said during his press conference today of Gleason that, “He is one of our core players, someone who brings character and leadership to our locker room, along with being a key piece on the ice. This is a very important signing for our team going forward.”
Gleason’s mental toughness and drive is something you can’t teach among defenseman. He earned the respect among the Hurricanes fans after many key plays during their 2008-2009 Stanley Cup Playoff run and because of this he was selected to represent Team USA in the 2010 Winter Olympics, winning a Silver Medal.
With Gleason’s contract extension (worth approximately 16 million dollars) it is safe to say he has been moved off of the trade block for the Hurricanes. You can only speculate that names like Jaroslav Spacek and Bryan Allen may be added to the list of players who the Hurricanes wouldn’t mind shopping at the NHL Trade Deadline which is less than a month away now.
