Cam Newton stayed up all night last month shooting an Under Armour commercial; they reportedly started filming at 7 pm and continued until around 4 am. The Panthers star is depicted running drills in Under Armour gear and UA Highlight cleats at Bank of America stadium, yelling at his personal DJ in the booth to turn it up, and making cuts and throws like it is 2011 or something.
This is Under Armour’s first advertising campaign built around a single athlete, which is apparently what happens after you have the best rookie quarterback season ever.
The spot will air next Thursday and definitely succeeds in making Cam look good in light blue under a drumming base-line and the bright lights of Bank of America stadium. The scintillating drum beats by AraabMuzik are what make the commercial hip and what the concept was built around: showing an athlete doing unheard of things, while a DJ does the same with his beats.
Cam is certainly happy with the result. “It works because we can relate to each other,” Cam said. “Araab goes into the club, I go onto the field, and people are waiting and anticipating something great to happen and we both have to deliver. He’s come through and left people in amazement and I’m still faced with that challenge.”
The Panthers front office will probably see ticket sales rise, but Ron Rivera might wish his quarterback was spending more time throwing to actual receivers instead of actors.
Hopefully, the Panthers star quarterback can back it up on the field next year. Some media have questioned whether Ron Rivera’s game-planning masked Newton’s weaknesses last year, and posit that he is poised for a sophomore slump.
Ron Rivera obviously does not think so, and neither does Under Armor.
