Matt Forte was an MVP candidate for the first several weeks of the season. Despite his injury last Sunday against the Chiefs, he hasn’t been as effective. I’m guessing he’s had a few other nagging injuries as well before injuring his MCL.
Forte’s style works well for Jay Cutler, but I’m not sure if it will for Caleb Hanie. Forte is a limited blocker and isn’t a downhill runner. Considering Hanie hasn’t shown the ability to roll the way Cutler can, Forte has been forced into more of an inside runner and blocker. This just isn’t his game.
However, this is Marion Barber’s game. He’s a bruising back than will remain a force inside of the tackles. He’s a solid blocker and will give Hanie more time. Kahlil Bell is also a slashing-type back. I’ve always like Bell and would like to see him get a chance. I think this will be an excellent time for Bell to show us some things.
Don’t get me wrong, I’d like to have Forte, but for the short term, this may give the Bears an opportunity to control the football and not allow Hanie to make mistakes.
