Five weeks ago, the Chicago Bears looked like contenders for the NFC. Boy how times have changed! It’s beyond upsetting; it’s depressing. Things have gotten so bad that it’s possible that the Bears are one of the worst teams in the NFL.
Injuries obviously are the major cause of problem, but the alarming part of this whole thing are the poor reserves on this roster. There’s no depth. While guys like Marion Barber are talented, they’re unprepared and ignorant. How many times can back-up players lack knowledge of football common sense? For a guy that’s been with the Bears for four years, how can Caleb Hanie not understand how to play quarterback? Even with questionable talent, some of his decisions are downright pathetic.
Is this coaching, player development, front office ignorance or all-of-the-above? It’s has to be all three. And the saddest part is that for the guys that are superstars like Brian Urlacher, Lance Briggs and Julius Peppers, the window is closing fast. Pretty soon, they’ll be gone and there’s not any talent in the wings.
While I’m at the game on Sunday night against the Green Bay Packers, I will think of the season that could have been and probably get angry again quickly.
