Chicago Bears: How Much Will Devin Hester Contribute On Offense?
The attempted transition of Devin Hester has been one of the more frustrating aspects of this Chicago Bears team to watch over the past few seasons. Though it isn’t entirely his fault.
Hester was, somehow, expected to quickly adapt to the position and become a no. 1 receiver. That didn’t happen, and the ridiculous system implemented by Mike Martz the past few seasons didn’t help matters.
This year, it’s a different story. The acquisition of Brandon Marshall and selection of Alshon Jeffery in the NFL Draft back in April provides the Bears with multiple assets in the passing game, taking the pressure off of Hester. With Marshall, Jeffery, and Earl Bennett in the fold, the expectations aren’t too high for Hester. It wouldn’t be too surprising to see him as the no. 4 guy on the depth chart by the time the regular season rolls around.
But should expectations for Hester really be that low? This is a guy with the physical tools to succeed and has really been impressive in training camp this year.
In terms of his numbers, yes. There are too many other weapons on this offense to expect much from him in the box score. As far as his performance, though, the Bears can finally utilized Hester in the way he was meant to be used. They can line him up in the slot and draw up some plays that get him in open space.
With Marshall and Jeffery on the field as well, you know there are going to be mismatches. Even if the numbers don’t reflect it, Hester is going to be a weapon and he will be very much a factor in this new Bears passing game.
Once again, Hester is turning heads at Bears camp. With the pressure now off of him, as a receiver, we may finally see Devin Hester really show us something on offense in 2012.
