Kirby Lee-US PRESSWIRE

Chicago Bears wide receiver Devin Thomas has announced on his Twitter page that he has retired from the NFL. The Bears have not confirmed that he has retired, but not too long ago Thomas walked off the field. The news is actually shocking as he’s only 25-years old.

The Bears signed Thomas on March 28th to work on special teams. I don’t know how much was on the 1-year contract, but I have to imagine the contract was voided and the Bears have a little extra money in their pocket. I had him as the Bears 6th receiver, but there was also a chance he would not make the 53-man roster. Now the Bears are going to have open competition for the 6th wide receiver. It opens up a spot for Dane Sanzenbacher who I thought would miss the cut and eventually be picked up by another team. Sanzenbacher came out of no where last year and would be a great guy to return to the Bears wide receiver crew.

Thomas was drafted by the Washington Redskins in the second round (pick 34) of the 2008 draft. Thomas played with the Redskins until 2010. Thomas was then picked up by the Carolina Panthers for the 2010 season and his last team he would have played for in the NFL the New York Giants

In his 6 year career … Thomas has 43 receptions, 482 yards, 11.2 yards per catch, and 3 touchdowns. Thomas also has 1 career rushing touchdown and 51 yards. The stats don’t look great at all, but Thomas made his name on special teams. He has returned in his career and was a great tackler too. That’s why the Bears signed him.

The Bears special teams was already crowd , so the lost of Thomas does not hurt.

In this off-season, the Bears have had 2 players retire of whom were still young … RB Marion Barber and now Thomas.

I wish Thomas the best of luck and his long life ahead!
