It’s no secret with this Chicago Bears team that the secondary is a big concern. That concern has grown even larger with the injuries at the safety position.

Already without rookie safety Brandon Hardin, whose status is completely unknown for the foreseeable future because of a neck injury, the team is also going to be without second-year man Chris Conte because of a shoulder injury. Conte could be ready for the regular season opener, though that’s not confirmed.

That left the Bears to roll with a starting safety combination of Major Wright and Craig Steltz against the New York Giants on Friday night, a combo that no one is likely too excited about, and they proved why early on in the tilt against New York.

Now the Bears are starting to begin looking at outside help at the safety spot, and apparently that starts with former Green Bay Packers safety Charlie Peprah.

The Bears have a reported interest in Peprah, who was released by the Packers earlier this off-season. He had a couple of fine years the last two seasons in Green Bay, with last season proving particularly impressive. Peprah notched 94 tackles and had five interceptions for the year.

The big question with Peprah is going to be his health. He was released because he failed a physical after undergoing knee surgery. That’s certainly something the Bears are going to be concerned about before they move forward.

But if he proves healthy, this could be a nice match for the Bears. Their starting safeties are currently a mess, even when healthy. Peprah proved to be a solid presence in the secondary for their biggest rivals the past two years with Green Bay, so taking a chance on him could certainly be worth it.
