John Danks Undergoes Successful Shoulder Surgery
Chicago White Sox starting pitcher John Danks underwent successful shoulder surgery on Monday. Danks has been on the disabled list since the middle of May when he felt some discomfort after a start. The White Sox thought that Danks would be back after a quick DL trip, then it turned into he would be back a week or two after the All Star break and now he has had surgery and is expected to be back for the start of Spring Training in 2013.
Danks’ surgery was considered exploratory, but when they got in there the doctors arthroscopically fixed a capsular tear and minor debridements of the rotator cuff and biceps in his left shoulder. Danks is known as a stubborn guy who wants to pitch all the time and it ended up hurting him and the team this season. The White Sox have one of the best medical staffs in baseball at keeping pitchers healthy, but they have to be honest on how they are feeling. Hopefully Danks realizes now that he has to trust the medical team and let them deal with the pain or discomfort he is feeling.
Danks, 27, was having by far his worst season of his career in 2012. In 9 starts, Danks who was 3-4, had a 5.70, giving up 34 earned runs and 57 hits in 53.2 innings pitched. He had a 30/23 K/BB ratio. 2012 was the first year of his new 5-year, $65 million contract that was signed in the offseason.
Overall, it is a big loss for a team that has some starters struggling. But with the addition of Francisco Liriano and rookie Jose Quintana stepping up in a big way, the Chicago White Sox should be able to make up for the loss of Danks. Pitching will be one of the reason when or if the White Sox win the AL Central division.
