Chicago White Sox Prospect Report 8/9
The Chicago White Sox got a pleasant surprise when prospect outfielder Brandon Short returned early from a torn labrum he suffered in Spring Training. He was expected to miss the entire 2012 season because of the injury he sustained when he crashed into the center field wall while trying to make a catch.
Before the start of the 2011 season, John Sickels had Short ranked as the 14th best prospect in the White Sox system. The 23 year old Short had a break out season in 2010 when he hit .316/.365/.491 with 31 doubles, 5 triples, 15 home runs and 79 RBI with 7 stolen bases. He followed the ’10 season with a decent 2011 season where he hit .262/..318/.411 with 29 doubles, 5 triples, 13 home runs and 60 RBI with 21 stolen bases. He would probably rank in the low teens behind outfielders like Courtney Hawkins, Trayce Thompson, Jared Mitchell and Keenyn Walker.
Starting pitcher Andre Reinzo of the AA Birmingham Barons has continued a very stellar season and could potentially be setting himself up for a September call up. Between Birmingham and A+ Winston-Salem Dash, Reinzo has a 7-1 record with a 2.08 ERA in 78 innings pitched (14 starts). He has given up only 58 hits to go with a 88/34 K/BB ratio and hasn’t allowed a home run this season.
Reinzo spent the first part of the season with Winston-Salem tallying a very low 1.08 ERA in 4 starts, but was then suspended 50 games for testing positive for PED use. When he was reinstated, the White Sox sent him directly to AA Birmingham and in 10 starts, he has pitched to a 2.55 ERA. Overall, I think the 24 year old could be an interesting prospect to watch come Spring Training in 2013.
