Paul Konerko to 7 Day Disabled List With Concussion
Chicago White Sox first baseman Paul Konerko was placed on the 7 day disabled list Friday afternoon with a concussion. Konerko gave it a try before Friday’s series opener with the Oakland A’s, but his symptoms just aren’t allowing him to do baseball activities right now. The 7-day DL was started just a few seasons ago for concussions. Konerko suffered the head trauma on Tuesday night when Jared Dyson, of the Kansas City Royals, ran into him on a bang bang play at first base.
Konerko has been one of the most valuable players to the White Sox this season as he has hit .316/.388/.504 with 17 doubles, 18 home runs and 54 RBI. The White Sox’ front office, coaching staff, players and fans are all holding there breath hoping like hell that this situation doesn’t turn out like the Justin Morneau situation has for the Minnesota Twins. Morneau suffered a concussion in 2010 when he was well on his way to another MVP type season. He only managed 69 games in 2011 and hasn’t been close to the same hitter before he suffered the head injury.
The White Sox are expected to make a corresponding move on Saturday. The move is expected to be AAA Charlotte Knights first baseman Dan Johnson, who has had a great season so far. Johnson, 32, is hitting .266/.396/.505 with 20 doubles, 25 home runs and 73 RBI with a great 80/87 K/BB ratio. Johnson isn’t going to match Konerko’s production most likely, but will help take some of the load off of guys like Alex Rios, Adam Dunn and AJ Pierzynski. I think manager Robin Ventura would rather have Johnson be the DH rather than throwing Orlando Hudson out there for a week.
