MLB Rumors: Nick Masset Nearing Return
MLB Rumors has noted that Nick Masset is getting ever so close to a return to the bullpen for the Cincinnati Reds. The rumor mill has Masset becoming available for the Reds within a week.
Masset went on the DL for the Reds back in March of this season because of shoulder problems. He has been working to return to the Reds ever since. Masset’s rehab has taken some ups and downs along the way, however, it appears that the 6’4″, 235 lbs. right-hander is just about ready to make his long awaited 2012 debut with the Reds.
Masset has spent the last part of his rehab in Louisville where he has worked two games. In his last outing, August 10, Masset pitched one shutout inning. Overall in Louisville, he has pitched almost 3 innings and given up 2 runs. Those are the only 2 runs he has given up in 5+ innings of work in his rehab.
The question, of course, is what will the Reds do when they do bring Masset up to their roster? MLB Rumors has it that the Reds will do one of two things. One is move Logan Ondrusek, either in a trade or down to Louisville, or wait until September with Masset and bring him up when they can expand their roster.
For my money, I would just wait. As valuable as Masset is and will be to the Reds, I say keep him at AAA and let him work there, then bring him up in September. There appears to be no pressing need to disrupt the bullpen as of now. They still lead the league in many categories and are still one of the best, if not the best, in the league. Of course, one injury and Masset may find himself in Cincinnati tomorrow.
