NFL Rumors: Cleveland Browns Looking to Trade Colt McCoy for Sixth-Round Pick or Better
The Cleveland Browns have been back and forth all off-season regarding their stance on quarterback Colt McCoy. The Browns drafted Oklahoma State quarterback Brandon Weeden in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft to presumably take McCoy’s starting job in Cleveland. On Friday, a rumor surfaced stating the Browns are willing to trade McCoy for a sixth-round draft pick.
Again, this is a rumor and there is no confirmation of it whatsoever, but it makes sense for a team looking to improve its roster by adding new starters across the board. Along with Weeden, the Browns also drafted former Heisman Trophy finalist and Alabama running back Trent Richardson, meaning Cleveland is ready to head in a different direction offensively.
The Browns obviously aren’t looking to land a future Hall of Famer with the sixth-round pick they might receive for McCoy, but it does appear they’re looking to get the former Texas Longhorns Heisman finalist out of the picture to maximize Weeden’s progress in his rookie season.
Potential trade partners for this deal include the Dallas Cowboys, Jacksonville Jaguars, Arizona Cardinals, Minnesota Vikings and Philadelphia Eagles to name a few. While McCoy hasn’t been incredibly successful in Cleveland, many NFL scouts believe he has the potential to develop into a viable starting passer, especially for a quarterback-needy team like the Jaguars or Cardinals.
There’s no telling whether or not this rumor is true or whether the teams mentioned are actually interested, but it all makes sense. Stay tuned because this rumor is likely to heat up over the next few weeks.
