Surfing has always been recognized as the most popular sport in the state of Hawaii–but it was never offered for students to participate in at the high school level like other popular sports such as football, basketball, or baseball. Now, it appears the sport will be offered
According to Daniel Ikalka Ito of ESPN.com, the state of Hawaii made history on Monday by becoming the first state in the nation that will offer surfing as a high school sport. As of now, the plan is to make surfing available for students to participate in by the spring of 2013–so potential student-athletes will still have to wait at least a whole year before it’s officially offered.
“We wanted to get the entire administration team together to show that we’re in total support,” Board of Education member Keith Abercrombie said courtesy of ESPN. “Surfing is the official sport of the state of Hawaii, but we haven’t been able to put together the necessary protocols in the schools until now. One of the advantages of the new school board is the new sense of cooperation.”
Not only will this sport become popular pretty quickly once it becomes available for students in school, but it should also help from an education perspective as students will have to maintain a 2.0 grade point average to participate. It’s hard to believe this sport wasn’t available for students before considering how popular it is in Hawaii–but it’s good to see the state making all of the right moves to change that.
