For all the beauty that there is in soccer, there is also some ugliness. I’m not talking about fan rowdiness or blown calls, I’m talking about flopping. Flopping is why 95 percent of Americans make fun of soccer. Flopping occurs in all sorts of sports, but in the one that isn’t mainstream in the US, flopping gets called out the most. In this incident, the flop is pure comedy gold.
Aurelien Chedjou reacted to a soft tap from Giampaolo Pazzini like a sniper shot him through the eye. Chedjou’s Lille squad was defeated 1-0 so maybe Chedjou was trying to set up a comeback. Instead, he pulled off an acting job that no one bought. In cases like this that I’ve seen, a yellow card is normally given. Chedjou’s flop was so awful, the refs did not even bother to penalize Pazzini.
Soccer is starting to make inroads in the US, but flops like this make it the butt of jokes. Then again, if soccer players want to flop like that, maybe we don’t want it to be a popular sport in America.
