Former MLB Star Lenny Dykstra Facing Serious Jail Time
Former MLB player Lenny Dykstra had been best known for chomping on large wads of carcinogenic chew during his playing days with the New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies. Oh, and he was a pretty decent ball player that helped the Mets rally to beat the Boston Red Sox in the 1986 World Series. Unfortunately, that was a lifetime ago. These days he is best known for having more legal troubles than Hollywood train wreck Lindsey Lohan.
The 48 year-old Dykstra appeared in Los Angeles Superior court to agree to plead no contest to three counts of felony grand theft auto, and one count of submitting false statements to a financial institution. (that’s a fancy way to say bank)
In California, pleading “no contest” is essentially like entering a “guilty” plea allowing a plea deal to be constructed. The former member of the World Champion Mets had faced 25 separate criminal charges but under the agreement 21 of the charges were dismissed.
Dykstra now faces a maximum penalty of four years in prison instead of a possible 12 if the other charges had stuck. He is scheduled to be formally sentenced on January 20. Despite facing prison time, under a new California law he would only be required to serve his sentence out in L.A. County Jail.
I guess that could be considered a complimentary upgrade courtesy of the California legal system. It’s also like Carson Palmer being traded from the Cincinnati Bengals to the Oakland Raiders. There really is no winner either way.
Dykstra is accused of leasing luxury cars from an L.A. dealership with fake documents. There were also drug charges tossed in for good measure.
Even with the good news, life is not going to be all stolen bases and walk-off doubles for Dykstra. He still faces two other criminal charges unrelated to this particular case. “Nails” was indicted in May for “stealing or destroying” almost $400,000 in property that was part of a prior bankruptcy case. Dykstra allegedly sold off valuable items in the home despite court orders not to do so from his bankrupt estate.
Then in August, he was charged in Los Angeles with showing his “bat” to unsuspecting women who had replied to an ad he posted online for an employment opportunity.
By all accounts Dykstra lived a tamer life as a ball player in the 80′s and if you’ve heard any of the rumors regarding those Mets teams, that’s saying something.
He’s been released on his own recognizance until his sentencing. Let’s hope he can keep himself out of trouble in the meantime.
