Video: Michigan State’s Kirk Cousins Completes Hail Mary Pass to Keith Nichol as Time Expires to Defeat Wisconsin
In what may go down as one of the craziest endings in college football history, the Michigan State Spartans just about crushed the National Championship hopes and dreams for the Wisconsin Badgers on Saturday night after completing a Hail Mary Pass as time expired to pull off the 37-31 upset.
With the game tied 31-31, Kirk Cousins threw up a Hail Mary towards the end zone with just a few seconds left that somehow ended up in the hands of Keith Nichol at the one-yard line after Wisconsin defenders swatted the ball down. Instead of the ball dropping to the ground, it ended up in Nichol’s hands and he fought his way across the goal line for the 44-yard touchdown catch to give Michigan State the win.
The ironic thing is, the ball was originally ruled down at the one-yard line before officials overruled the call after reviewing the play and determining Nichol’s had in fact crossed the goal line. It’s amazing how this game ended since Michigan State fought back from a 14-0 deficit by scoring 23 points in the second quarter and never trailed for the rest of the game. Considering this game appeared to be heading into overtime, this will easily go down as one of the top plays from the 2011 season in college football–if not all time.

If you look at the 2nd to last play of the Wisconsin vs. MSU, how the refs and all the sport commentator not see the false start is beyond me. Had they called this penalty, MSU would have been pushed back another 10yrds and that last play would not have been close to the endzone and the game would go to OT. That and the fact that the replay boot overturned the call on the last play with less than indisputable proof has to make one think that the game was fixed. While Wisconsin can go one and win the Big 10 championship and the Rose Bowl, the blatant bad ref’ing all but kills their chance at a BCS or should I say BSCS championship.
i believe the entire play should be reviewed then, not just if he crossed into the endzone. also, isn’t the replay booth supposed to see beyond any doubt that the call should have been different than what was called on the field??? replay isnt supposed to be for “in our judgement he crossed the plain the therfore a touchdown” replay is for evidence of a wrong call to be reversed. very poor handling of the entire last play review process that had a lot on the line for both teams who both work there butts of to get to that level of play only to have the last play not be looked at entirely, from ball set for play to the whistle at the end. if you ask me both teams were cheated!
